I don't generally like to admit my ignorance in matters. After all, your ignorance of my ignorance is my bliss. But allow me to fess up.
A reader wrote me today to ask my thoughts on Ann Richards. Well, the name rang a bell but I couldn't remember who she was. George W.'s predecessor as governor of Texas. Right.
Honestly, I don't know enough to comment. What little I know, she was admirable. Any woman who competed in the male-dominated world pre-1986 is a pretty cool chick in my mind, and she's by proxy about as cool as it comes, in that case.
Found a great quote of hers, talking about Georgie's daddy. "Poor George, he can't help it...He was born with a silver foot in his mouth."
But, yeah, all I can say is that there are women who go down as feminist role models, and she's got a great place on that list, for sure.
Still intending to write about the blogosphere. Friday night's a write night. After 9, anyhow. Must have drinks. ( :) Whee! Friday!)
LONDON, England (Reuters) -- Elton John has put an end to his feud with fellow British pop star George Michael, declaring: "We're fine."
ReplyDeleteThe row erupted two years ago when John said Michael appeared to be in a "strange place," wasting his talent by staying at home and shunning the limelight.
Michael later complained that harsh media treatment of his private life started after John's adverse comments.
John was all sweetness and light on Friday, telling television host Michael Parkinson: "George and I are fine. He came and stayed down my house last year. We're fine."
Putting an end to the public spat, John said "I'd rather keep my mouth shut...It's up to him what he does with his life really and I don't really want to get into that any more."
Michael ended years of speculation about his sexuality by announcing he was gay after he was arrested in 1998 for engaging in a "lewd act" in a public toilet in Los Angeles.
Michael, the former frontman of Wham!, was arrested in February for possessing illegal drugs.
The singer, who has sold more than 80 million records with hits such as "Careless Whisper," will launch his first tour in 15 years later this month in Barcelona.
GM!!! ON TOUR!!!!!!!!!
OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG!!!!!
Yeah, I saw that and checked his site -- no North American dates. I saw his only-ever Vancouver gig back in 1988 with my friend Tina and it was awesomeness. The Cover-to-Cover tour, where he ONLY did covers. Nothing like George doing Superstition and Play that Funky Music!
ReplyDeleteBut if he comes, I'll go witcha.
I didn't realize GM was gay, but I never keep track of those things anyway. I thought he was married at one point. Oh well. Learn something new all the time.
ReplyDeleteAnn Richards is what I think of when I think of Texan. Not the poseur in the White House. She was original. Something Hillary C could learn to do once in awhile.
Steff. Glad you're back to your old / new form. You rock.
Ann Richards was quite the character, and led Texas with the true flair that Texas politics can be known for. Truly a remarkable woman!
ReplyDeleteAnother quote that I liked was spoken in front of the National Democratic Convention.
"Just remember that Ginger Rodgers did everything Fred Astair did...except she did it backwards, in high heels!"
Gotta love it!
Peace Always
